Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Cinema Watch collects when you use our website, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

Last updated: September 19, 2026

1. Who we are

Cinema Watch (“we”, “us”) is a service for tracking, rating and discussing movies and TV shows. This policy covers the Cinema Watch website and the features on it. If you have a question about it, write to hello@cinema-watch.com.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Account: your email address and password. Passwords are stored in hashed form by our authentication provider, and we never see them in plain text.
  • Profile: your first and last name, username and profile link, avatar, and display preferences such as time format and the adult-content setting.
  • Activity: titles you mark as watched (with the date), like, rate and review, the lists you create and whether they are public or private, your comments and reactions in discussions, your friends and friend requests, your swipes, and the trophies you earn.
  • Messages to us: feedback (your name and email if you provide them, the message, and the page you sent it from), copyright complaints (the description, the page, and your account ID if you are signed in), and your email address if you join the newsletter.

Information collected automatically

  • Technical data such as your IP address, browser and device type, and standard server logs, which we and our hosting and security providers use to run and protect the service.
  • Cookies and similar storage that keep you signed in and remember your settings. See our Cookie Policy.
  • If you accept analytics: how you use the site, such as pages visited, clicks, scrolling and session recordings, collected by Microsoft Clarity. We do not load Clarity unless you accept.

3. How we use your information

  • To create and secure your account, sign you in, and provide the features you use.
  • To show your profile, lists, reviews and comments to others, as described below.
  • To send emails you need, such as account confirmation and password reset.
  • To send the newsletter, only if you subscribed.
  • To respond to feedback and handle copyright complaints.
  • To moderate content, prevent abuse and spam, and keep the service secure.
  • To understand how the site is used and improve it, if you accept analytics.
  • To meet our legal obligations.

Where the law requires a legal basis, we rely on performing our agreement with you (your account and its features), our legitimate interests in running, securing and improving the service, your consent (analytics and the newsletter), and legal obligations.

4. What other people can see

  • Your profile page, including your name, username, avatar and viewing statistics, can be viewed by anyone who has the link.
  • Lists you mark as public can be viewed by anyone who has the link.
  • Lists you keep private are visible only to you.
  • Reviews, comments and reactions you post can be seen by other users and may be shown publicly, together with your name, avatar and profile link.
  • Friends you connect with can see that connection.

Think before you post: content you share publicly may be copied by others.

5. Who we share information with

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. We use service providers who process information on our behalf:

  • Supabase for our database and authentication.
  • Vercel for hosting.
  • Cloudflare for network security, bot protection and content delivery.
  • Cloudinary for storing and delivering images, including avatars.
  • Resend for sending email.
  • Microsoft Clarity for analytics, only if you accept. Microsoft handles that data under its own privacy statement.

Film and TV details come from The Movie Database (TMDB) and OMDb. We request titles from them; we do not send them your personal information.

We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect the rights, safety and security of our users or the service, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.

6. International transfers

Our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where the law requires it, we rely on appropriate safeguards for those transfers, such as standard contractual clauses.

7. How long we keep information

We keep your account and activity while your account is open. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal information, except where we must keep something to meet a legal obligation or resolve a dispute, such as a copyright complaint record. Backups and logs are removed on a rolling basis.

8. Your rights and choices

You can edit your profile and change your list visibility in your account settings. You can change your cookie choice at any time with the “Cookie settings” link in the footer. To unsubscribe from the newsletter, email us.

Depending on where you live, including the EEA, the UK and California, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. To use any of these rights, email hello@cinema-watch.com. We may need to confirm it is you before we act. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

9. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, but no service is completely secure. Use a strong, unique password and keep it private.

10. Children

Cinema Watch is not meant for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version here with a new “last updated” date, and tell you about significant changes where we can.
