Stranger Things Is Getting Another Prequel Series: Meet Other Worlds

Netflix is expanding the Stranger Things universe once again with Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a new live-action prequel set in 1955. Here's what we know about the upcoming series, its creative team, setting and expected 2028 release.

The world of Stranger Things isn't disappearing anytime soon. Netflix is officially expanding its supernatural universe with a brand-new live-action prequel series, Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, taking fans somewhere entirely new while traveling further back into the franchise's mysterious past.

Announced on November 6, 2026, in celebration of Stranger Things Day, the upcoming series is expected to arrive on Netflix in 2028. And while details are being kept firmly under wraps, its premise is already giving fans plenty to be curious about.

A New Mystery Set in the 1950s

Unlike the original series, which introduced audiences to the strange happenings of Hawkins, Indiana, Other Worlds will take viewers back to the 1950s, decades before Eleven, Mike, Dustin and the rest of the gang ever encountered the Upside Down.

The first teaser offers a glimpse of Marion, Nevada, on April 19, 1955. An abandoned bicycle, an old radio and an ominous sky hint at something deeply unsettling happening in this seemingly ordinary corner of America.

It's a different setting and a different generation, but the familiar combination of small-town mystery, supernatural horror and unexpected discoveries appears to be very much alive.

Perhaps most interestingly, the series will take place before the events of the Broadway stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explores the early history of Henry Creel.

Netflix hasn't revealed exactly how the new story connects to the mythology established in the original series. That mystery is part of the appeal.

The Duffer Brothers Are Returning

Matt and Ross Duffer are once again helping shape the next chapter of the franchise, co-creating the series alongside longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry.

Trefry will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer. She has been involved with Stranger Things since its second season and also wrote The First Shadow, making her particularly familiar with the mythology and storytelling that have helped make this universe so compelling.

The series also brings in an exciting directing talent. Joe Wright, known for films including Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes.

Shawn Levy is also returning as an executive producer through 21 Laps Entertainment, alongside the Duffer Brothers through Upside Down Pictures.

The creative team suggests Netflix isn't treating this as just another spin-off. There's an opportunity here to build something that feels connected to the original while establishing its own identity.

A Different Kind of Stranger Things Story

One of the biggest challenges facing any Stranger Things spin-off is finding a reason to exist beyond revisiting familiar characters and locations.

Fortunately, Other Worlds appears to be taking a different approach.

Rather than simply returning to Hawkins, the series will introduce a new setting, new heroes, new villains and an entirely new collection of mysteries. The story will still carry the DNA of the original, but it has room to explore corners of this universe audiences haven't experienced before.

The 1950s setting is particularly intriguing. It opens the door to a different atmosphere, with an entirely different cultural landscape and a new generation encountering something they cannot possibly understand.

And considering how much of the original series revolved around government experiments, secret laboratories and supernatural forces, there are plenty of possibilities for a story set decades earlier.

Netflix hasn't announced its cast yet, so we'll have to wait a little longer to discover who will be leading this new adventure.

The Stranger Things Universe Keeps Growing

Even though the original Stranger Things concluded its five-season run in 2025, Netflix clearly isn't ready to leave this universe behind.

Between the Broadway production Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From '85 and now Other Worlds, the franchise is continuing to find new ways to tell stories within its supernatural mythology.

The important question is whether these new projects can capture the same magic that made the original series such a phenomenon.

Other Worlds has an opportunity to do exactly that. A new decade, a new location and a new group of characters could give the franchise the creative refresh it needs.

For now, we'll have to settle for a mysterious teaser and a handful of intriguing details. But if there's one thing Stranger Things has taught us, it's that sometimes the most interesting discoveries happen when you least expect them.

Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2028. Casting details and an exact release date have not yet been announced.
