Pennywise isn't the beginning of Derry's nightmare. A surprise Halloween release takes fans hundreds of years further into the town's terrifying past.
HBO Max has one more nightmare waiting for horror fans this Halloween. Without much warning, the streaming service has released a surprise installment of IT: Welcome to Derry, giving audiences an entirely new story set within Stephen King's terrifying universe.
Titled IT: Welcome to Derry – A Story of Derry, the standalone special takes viewers far beyond the familiar timeline of Pennywise. Instead of revisiting the events surrounding the murderous clown, the story explores a period hundreds of years before the creature became the face of Derry's evil.
And if there's one thing the franchise has established, it's that Derry has never been an ordinary place.
A Nightmare That Predates Pennywise
The new special follows three youngsters who venture into the Western Wood, where they encounter a terrifying ancient spirit. Set centuries before Pennywise, the story offers another glimpse into the supernatural forces that have shaped Derry throughout its history.
It's an interesting direction for the franchise. Rather than simply expanding on Pennywise's origins, the special opens the door to a much older mythology, suggesting that the horrors associated with Derry stretch back generations before the events audiences already know.
The cast includes Kiawentiio, Brandon Oakes, Isabel Deroy-Olson, Michael Podemski-Bedard, Morningstar Angeline, Jennifer Podemski, Brenda Odjick, Jennifer Guerrero, Zahn McClarnon, and Eric Trask.
Cherie Dimaline and Jasmyne Flournoy penned the special, with Tazbah Chavez stepping behind the camera as director.
A Halloween Surprise From HBO Max
The timing couldn't be better. Released on Halloween, the unexpected addition gives fans another reason to return to one of horror television's most unsettling fictional towns.
The announcement caught viewers by surprise, with fans quickly sharing their excitement across social media. For a franchise built around unexpected appearances and things lurking in the darkness, a secret Halloween release feels particularly fitting.
And unlike a traditional episode teasing what's coming next, A Story of Derry stands as an opportunity to explore a completely different chapter of the franchise's mythology.
Welcome to Derry Season 2 Goes Back to 1935
The special isn't the only reason fans have to look forward to more Derry. HBO has already renewed IT: Welcome to Derry for a second season, which will move the story forward to 1935 during the Great Depression.
The upcoming season is expected to revolve around the infamous Bradley Gang massacre. The storyline follows a group of bank robbers who arrive in Derry to purchase ammunition, only to find themselves caught up in something far more horrifying than they could have anticipated.
It's another dark chapter in the town's history, and one that should give the series plenty of room to explore the relationship between Derry's violent past and the evil that continues to haunt it.
A premiere date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
Derry's History Is Far More Terrifying Than Its Clown
Based on Stephen King's bestselling 1986 novel IT, the HBO series serves as a prequel to the 2017 film IT and its 2019 sequel, IT Chapter Two.
The series debuted in October 2025 and quickly established itself as a major success for HBO Max, ranking among the platform's top four series premieres worldwide.
With the second season heading into the 1930s and the new Halloween special reaching back centuries earlier, the franchise is taking an increasingly ambitious approach to its storytelling.
Pennywise may be the monster everyone recognizes, but Welcome to Derry continues to make one thing clear: the clown is only part of the story. The real horror may be the town itself.
IT: Welcome to Derry – A Story of Derry is streaming now on HBO Max. Season 2 of IT: Welcome to Derry is in development, with a release date still to be announced.
